Bell Lampshade Complete Restore, Recover

This shade looks like a simple repair, but actually, the arc of the shade can be difficult, but not as troublesome as the aluminum lampshade frame! The liner of this lampshade was completely intact, but the cover was falling apart panel by panel.  Most unusual.

The lampshade wire was aluminum, which I thought was a good thing as it would not rust.  I waxed the wire and let it sit overnight.  I wrapped the top and bottom wire with twill wrap, but did not wrap the vertical wires.

I made the new cover from ivory charmeuse silk and fit the cover to the frame.  I looked on the inside of the shade and there were black wire marks on the inside of the fabric from the vertical wires.  I pulled the cover off and wiped the wires.  A black residue was coming off the wire.  I re-waxed the wire and let it sit overnight a second time.

Wrapped Aluminum Wire Lampshade

After several attempts to ward off this problem, I wrapped the vertical wires with wrap.  I am sure the aluminum frame caused the original cover to fall apart by the panel (supported by the aluminum wire frame).

Each shade is a learning experience!

A-FRAME PLEATED LAMPSHADE LINER REPLACED, REPAIRED, Cleveland, Ohio

The liner of this A-frame pleated lampshade was brittle and starting to split.  The heat from standard light bulbs will quickly damage the liners of these contemporary  tunnel lampshades.  The heat concentrates in the top of the shade and causes damage.  I strongly advise people to use eco-friendly bulbs in these shades.

I was able to remove the trim and shredded liner.  The shade was restored with a new fabric liner and original trim.

Fabric deteriorates over time.  The liners, in particular, are subjected to intense heat.  The eco friendly bulbs, available today, will help the life expectancy of these tunnel like shades.

Lampshade liners repaired on vintage moire shades.  The liners of the 2 shades were shredding.  The liner would rip when you touched it, often due to high watt bulbs.  The A-frame structure of these shades does not allow the heat to escape and causes the liners to get brittle.  Always use eco friendly lighting in fabric lampshades.

Last project for 2014:   A set of Victorian Scalloped vintage lampshades.   Complete custom restoration project.  Wires treated for rust.  Custom hand sewn cover and liner.  New trim.  Rosette accents!

My customer inherited the beautiful lamps.  They have been passed through 2 generations.  The ceramic rose lamp bases are in mint condition, but the fabric shades were deteriorating.

Vintage Pleated Victorian Lampshade, Restore, Recovered, Repaired

I have seen quite a few victorian crown lampshades over the years.  This particular victorian crown shade was different from most of the vintage shades I see.  The center of the shade wires were not arched and the center shade was pleated.  The structured pleated center gave the lampshade a more modern look.

The lampshade fabric was starting to get brittle and weak.  The fabric was splitting when you touched it.

I had a consultation with my customer and suggested that the shade did not need the pleated center.  All knife pleated shades I have seen,  have been manufactured.   To order the “Sunburst” pleated center for one shade would be extravagant.   I did not visualize the straight vertical wires looking different than any of the other contoured victorian lampshades I have restored.

I removed all the fabric from the lampshade and restored the shade with an ivory charmeuse silk, attached the crown and took a look at the shade.    As I have said, most victorian crown shades have contour to the center wires.  This frame was very straight.  Something was missing.

I just could not let it go!  I had purchased a piece of “Fortuny Pleated Silk Chiffon” a while back, when I had the chance.    Pleated Silk Chiffon is a sheer, delicate fabric.   “Fortuny” means the pleats are not structured.  The pleats kind of have a mind of their own.   The finish is beautiful and a rare one of a kind lampshade finish.

Lampshade Repair, Lampshade Restored, Silk Sunshine Contemporary Shade

These are the pictures I received for a lampshade repair.  The liner looks brittle but not horrible.  Some jobs I take, I really am not sure if the lampshade is possible to repair.  I do know that the lampshade is not going to make if I don’t at least try.  My biggest concern was that the fabric cover was adhered to the plastic styrene liner other than the top and bottom wires.

The silk fabric cover was weak and splitting, not only from concentrated heat but partially due to the hard plastic pieces.  As soon as I took it out of the shipping box, I rested it on a similar shade to reduce the tension on the fabric.  I did not want the hard brittle plastic to puncture the delicate vintage fabric.

I  made a new styrene arc that was the same size as the original plastic liner.  The arc looks simple, but not always the case.

Luckily, the silk astrologic cover was only secured at the top and bottom shade wires.   The original shade had the fabric wrapped around the wires.   I was able to peel the fabric from the top and bottom wires without doing too much damage.  I knew I would have to blend a new grosgrain trim with the vintage fabric cover to finish the edges.    I had a grosgrain that matched  amazingly well.

As I was saying, I am not always sure I can repair a vintage piece.  In this case,  I was a “lampshade practitioner.”    I considered this lampshade repair “just short of a miracle”!

Such a beautiful accent lamp!

CAUTION:  I just want to point out that these A-frame lampshades are kind of like a tunnel at the top.    The heat from light bulbs rests in the top of these A-frame shades and causes damage.  Always use an eco friendly bulb to preserve these vintage pieces.

VINTAGE STENCIL LAMPSHADE RESTORED, REPAIRED

This vintage stenciled lampshade “The Olde Country Shoppe” was no longer usable.  The spider wire that holds the top of the lampshade onto the harp of the lamp broke off the shade.  The original weld broke loose.  The circular 10” wire was still attached to the shade.

On this antique shade, the actual wire is on the outside of the lampshade.  Most often the wires are on the inside.   I ordered a new 10” top spider wire to use for the repair, but the wire would not sit on the lampshade cover correctly.  I had to reattach the original spider wire to the circular wire to be able to repair the shade.  I used an epoxy putty welding mixture to reattach the spider wire to the 10” circular wire after I removed the circular wire from the shade.

These antique shades have some kind of heavy bronze cardboard trim that was used to attach the wire to the shade.  It is not available today.  I used black grosgrain ribbon to reattach the top wire and also covered the bottom shade wire to match.  The bottom shade wire was also starting to get weak and would have only been a matter of  time until the bottom wire fell off the shade.  I trimmed with a brown velvet trim to get a clean finish.

After I was able to put the shade on a lamp, I could see why my customer wanted to save the shade.  The windows of “The Olde Country Shoppe”  light up when the light is on.  So quaint!

The lampshade sits on an antique apple peeler that was turned into a light.  Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of the lamp base but it is awesome.  I will try to get back to my customers home to get a picture of the entire lamp.  It is truly one of a kind!
