Vintage Lamp Shade Restore, Silk and Chennille Trim

lamp, lamp shade, vintage, silk, replace, cover, trim, recover

Restored Small Drum Vintage Contemporary Lampshade.  The new cover is Ivory Charmeuse Silk with coordinatingIvory Chennile trim.  Cleaned wire; Replaced Cover;  Line & New Trim

This vintage shade cover was stapled.  I have seen this many times and cannot imagine actually getting a clean finish stapling the material onto the frame!   I am just guessing, but I believe the stapling technique to be a manufacturers technique in the 50’s.  That is my guess.

The liner was removed years prior.  Most likely due to dry rot from lighting.  The liners shred and turn to dust.  It is the best idea to remove the liners when they get brittle.  It really can be a hazardous situation if not removed.

The cover fabric was also getting brittle and started to tear.  It only takes slight, next to nothing, pressure to split the fabric when it gets this weak.

The original trim was a ruffled fabric woven in with a braid trim.  The fabric in the trim was dry rotted as well.  I could not reuse the trim.

I used Ivory Charmeuse Silk for the new cover.  The Charmeuse Silk is a beautiful, elegant, rich finish.  The silk cover does not absorb dust and dirt making it easy to maintain.  It only takes a soft cloth to brush the dust off.  The fabric ages with grace!

Since I was not able to restore the vintage trim, I used a Chenille ivory trim on the restored shade.  It was a perfect match.  The trim complimented the cover fabric.

COOLIE CHANDELIER LAMP SHADES REPAIRED, RESTORED

chandelier-candlelight-shades-ceiling-light-repair-restore, coolie

These are a set of 5 Chandelier Contemporary Lamp Shades.  The vintage lampshade covers were in mint condition, even the styrene liners were great.  The wires connected to the top and bottom of the shades were letting loose from the actual shades.  Not all the shades were having issues.   To keep the set looking consistent, all shades were trimmed top and bottom.

Chandelier Lamp Shades with Coolie Fitting

These particular candlelight shades have “Coolie” wire fittings.   The wire fitting sits on the socket of the bulb.  These small coolie fittings fit a candlelight bulb.  I am sure the reduced size of the fitting played a huge part in keeping the shades from deterioration from high heat.

Small Miniature Lamp with Shade Liner Replaced, Restored

The lampshade liner has been replaced on this very small boudior shade,  The entire lamp is only 18” high.  The ceramic lamp base is a personal lamp and the shade is in-house for a liner repair.   These miniature lamps are the prettiest accent lighting.

The very small lampshade liner was deteriorating from age and lighting.

For a lamp this small with a fabric lampshade, I use a socket reducer in the original lamp base socket.  The socket reducer allows a “night light bulb” or “Christmas bulb” to be used to light the lamp.

FABRIC LAMPSHADE LIGHTING SAFETY, CAUTION!

I restore lamp shades of all shapes, sizes and materials.  The following pictures are of a table light lamp with a fabric lampshade that had a 150 watt bulb.  The pictures are frightening!  The elderly seem to be most at risk trying to read by a table light.   A reading light with a metal shade for directional lighting should be used for reading.  NEVER USE A FABRIC LAMPSHADE FOR READING.

 lampshade-damaged-fire-light-bulbs-shade-restore-repair

Fire Damaged Fabric Lampshade used for Reading with a 150 Watt Bulb

This lampshade caught fire, but was handled immediately and did not cause a catastrophic situation.  Fabric shades are for accenting a room and lighting a path through an area.  Eco friendly bulbs are recommended for all fabric lined lampshades.  LED Light Bulbs are the coolest lighting available.  They stay cool no matter how many hours the light is on.  They come in Candlelight, 40 Watt, 60 Watt Bulbs etc.  I typically do not use more than a 40 Watt bulb in a fabric shade

Fire Damaged Fabric Lampshade used for Reading with a 150 Watt Bulb

Most often it is not even obvious that the lampshade liner is damaged until you dust or move the lamp.   You can check the lampshade liner by simply touching it and applying slight pressure to see if it is a solid firm liner.  Check the top of the shade as this is where the heat concentrates.  Weak fabric lampshade liners shred and will actually turn to dust when slight pressure is applied.

Please take the time to check all your fabric lampshades as well as  your children’s, parents, and grandparents lighting.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!

There are probably very few of these shades around today.  The ruffled covers were cleaned using a vacuum and lint roller.  The ruffled covers were three times the size of the lamp shade frame.

These shade are in for liner repairs.  No easy task.  I am not sure exactly how much I will have to take apart to get to the liners.

I have started by just cleaning the dust off.  I have swept them with a vacuum (light suction).

I then started with the lint roller on the crowns.  I used individual sheets to work on the (what I believe to be) tulle netting.  Nothing fast about this project.

Crown of Antique Colonial Ballerina Lampshade

One crown cleaned up pretty good and still had some color, pink.  The other shade must have sat in a window and near a heater.  The netting is faded and not quite as clean as the other.

The netting is sewn under the trim, so removing it and washing it is not an option.  This is a liner repair but I will do all I can to get as much of the dust out as possible.  This is just my first swipe at cleaning the netting on the top of the lampshade.

I will be posting throughout the next month as I tackle this project.

So that was the crown netting.  The bottom netting has dust debris as well.  I used the lint roller, moving probably 1/4” at a time.  The bottom netting dust didn’t seem to want to let loose as well.

Top 9” / 16” x Bottom 20” / 30” and height is 20.”

Again, this just my first attempt at cleaning.  I got what was loose, but there is along way to go.  The netting is pleated and makes it difficult to get between the folds.  For now, I am just going to move forward and go back to the netting later.

My next step will be to remove the crowns.  To remove the crowns the center braided satin decorative fabric will have to come off.

Crown restore:

I have removed the crown and crown cover.  While the crown cover was loose from the crown frame, I was able to do a deep clean on the outside and inside of the fabric.

The crown  lined with blush silk charmeuse as the original was also lined with a blush fabric.  The outside of the crown is covered with a poly.  The crown does not actually light up, but tends to be a dust collector.  Using charmeuse silk will allow the restored shade to age gracefully and not absorb dust.

One of the most difficult tasks on this project, is tacking the ruffles back in place,  Sewing through a heavy cover fabric, trim, through the replaced fabric, to the wrap that is on the wire is no easy task

Bottom Tier Restore:

Underneath the ruffled cover is the wire frame.  The inside of the lampshade has deteriorated.  As old as these shades are, they are in awesome condition.  Only one of these shades has a torn liner, but while doing the one, it was the best idea to do them both.

I removed the ruffled cover.

Ballerina Lampshade, Bottom Tier

Keep in mind the actual frame is only 20” in diameter or 60” around.  The ruffled cover is 180” around the bottom.  It is so large that is nearly covered a 42” round table.
